Written by: Josh Funk on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
The Game: Mercer Area (10 A) @ Kennedy Catholic (10 A)
Date: Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, from Kennedy Catholic HS in Hermitage
2008 Record: Mercer Area (2-0), Kennedy Catholic (0-2)
About Mercer Area: The Mustangs boast one of the top Class “A” teams in the District 10 landscape. The defending District 10 runners-up avenged their two losses to Mercyhurst Prep with a come-from-behind 26-14 victory in Erie in Week 1 after Mercyhurst jumped to a quick 14-0 lead. Since then, Mercer has not allowed a point. The Mustangs shut out Farrell, 20-0, last week.
The Mustangs’ pound-it-out ground attack averages 248 yards rushing per game, and a three-headed monster makes it work. Terrance Davis has run for 206 yards and two scores on 47 attempts, averaging 4.4 yards per rush. Rawlins Hunter adds 30 attempts for 195 yards (6.5 yards per rush) and three touchdowns, and quarterback Andrew Erdos chips in with 17 rushes for 53 yards.
Erdos, a 1,000-yard passer a year ago, has completed 7-of-19 passes for 72 yards with a touchdown and two picks. He directs an offense which averages 23 points per game.
About Kennedy Catholic: Ever since 2005, when Kennedy Catholic made its last PIAA playoff appearance (a 48-42 double overtime loss to Coudersport Area), and 2006, when Lee Plotts and Ross Gargano led the offense, the Eagles haven’t had much to cheer about. The Eagles begin 2008 at 0-2, eerily similar to how KC’s 2007 season started.
