Jeannette – Greensburg Central Catholic Preview

Written by: on Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The Game: Jeannette (7 AA) @ Greensburg Central Catholic (7 AA)

Date: Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, from Hempfield High School in Greensburg

2008 Record: Jeannette (8-0), Greensburg Central Catholic (8-0)

About Jeannette: Jeannette, surprise, surprise, is chasing some history…again.  If the Jayhawks defeat the Centurions Saturday night, it will be the school’s 650th all-time victory, according to the Pennsylvania Football News Resource Guide.  Jeannette, which entered the year with the ninth-most wins in state history, is currently 649-291-48, a winning percentage of .656.

The Jayhawks have gone 65-8 (.890) since the start of 2003.

Offensively, the Jayhawks have scored 348 points, good enough for an average of 43.5 points per game.  Jeannette is led by Ohio State commit Jordan Hall, who has two 100-yard rushing games and scored 15 touchdowns, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  The Jeannette ground game is also aided by Dane Vaughan, Mariel McGowan, James Derry, Justin Kettren, and Trent Errett.

Cameron Baradziej leads the Jayhawk offense at quarterback.  Occasionally, Hall takes a snap or two under center for Jeannette.

Jeannette’s defense has been another one of the highlights this year – opening the season with a 16-quarter scoreless streak.  Jeannette allows an average of 5.37 points per game, and has held a total of six opponents to eight points or less.

Jeannette has won the last three meetings with GCC by a combined margin of 73-22, including last year’s 42-6 demolition on the Hempfield High School turf.

About Greensburg Central Catholic: The Centurions really gained a lot of attention the middle part of this decade when the maroon and white were led by the trio of Max Suter, Cody Catalina, and Nick Sukay.  From ’05 to the end of ’06, GCC scored a total of 931 points.  This year is no different.

GCC has scored 383 points in 2008, good enough for an average of nearly 48 points per contest.  The last six weeks, Greensburg CC has scored 321 points (53.5 ppg.), and hasn’t been held below 49 points in any of those contests.

Central Catholic is led by running back David Miller, who has racked up 854 rushing yards and scored 30 touchdowns, which, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, leads all of the WPIAL, regardless of classification.  GCC averages over 250 rushing yards per game.

Quarterback Trent Hurley has thrown for 947 yards and six touchdowns.

The Centurion defense is also fairly steady, allowing a total of 63 points, which is barely a hair under eight points per game.
