GOOD KNIGHT: Wheeling Central Catholic Wins 34th in a Row

Written by: on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

WHEELING, W. Va. – Wheeling Central Catholic didn’t enter its game with mythical national championships or an intimidating marching band.

But the Maroon Knights did enter their showdown with local rival Steubenville Catholic Central on a 33-game winning streak and four consecutive class “A” state championships.

After Monday night, chalk up 34 straight wins.

Wheeling Central Catholic (1-0) went up-and-down the field against the Crusaders (0-2) to the tune of 436 yards in a convincing 33-0 blowout from Wheeling Island Stadium, which serves as the Knights’ home venue.

The Knights totaled 283 yards rushing a week after Steubenville Catholic allowed 222 rushing yards in a 27-13 loss to Columbiana.  For the season, the Crusaders have allowed over 500 rushing yards and an average of 30 points per game.

Wheeling Central Catholic got things started with a Zach Foose (7 rushes, 80 yards, 2 TD) 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to make it 6-0.  It capped a 6-play, 80-yard drive which ate up nearly three minutes of clock.

Then, it came time for the DeVaughan Gordon show.  #15 scored the next two touchdowns for the Knights on runs of one and 66 yards, respectively.

Gordon, a senior fullback who visited Rutgers University in the spring according to a Wheeling CC assistant, finished the game with 13 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Marcus Clifford then got in on the scoring parade with a 16-yard dash to push the Central Catholic lead to 27-0 with a little more than two minutes left in the second quarter.  Clifford finished with 67 rushing yards on just four carries.

Foose capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with an eight-yard scoring run.

Steubenville Catholic Central had several missed opportunities in the game, but the most notable was a turnover on downs at the Maroon Knight one yard line with just over 10:00 left in the game.  Running back Mickey Bendar (14 rushes, 57 yards) appeared to have crossed the goal line, but was ruled inches short.

Wheeling converted that turnover into a 3:11, 99-yard scoring drive, which became the story of the night – Wheeling converted its chances, Steubenville did nothing with theirs.

The Crusaders finished the night with 118 yards rushing and 127 yards passing.  Jordan Terraman, filling in for starter John DiCarlo, went 7-of-13 for 97 yards.  DiCarlo went 3-of-8 for 30 yards, but added three receptions for 68 yards.
