District 5 Talk Week 5

Written by: David Mika on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Three teams on top of D5 “A” race, defending champ not among them

Meyersdale, Berlin-Brothersvalley, and Conemaugh Township are each 4-1 through the fifth week of the season. The trio of teams each possess a better overall season record than defending champion Windber Area, which currently is 3-2.

Windber needs to make note of this fact: Since Berlin-Brothersvalley won consecutive D5 “A” titles in 1986 and ’87, no “A” team has repeated as district champion. That helps brighten the prospects for the Red Raiders, Mountaineers, and Indians to some degree.

Two of the top three “A” teams have won multiple D5 titles in their histories. The other hasn’t won a title in a decade and a half.

Meyersdale is the only District 5 team to have won a district title in multiple classifications. The Red Raiders won the 1990 “AA” title and the 1991 and 2006 “A” titles. Meyersdale went an impressive 11-1 in ’06, falling to Clairton in the state playoffs.

Berlin-Brothersvalley won three D5 titles in the first five years the district had a playoff system. The Mountaineers’ most recent title came in 2004. The 4-1 start is the team’s best since that championship season.

Lastly, Conemaugh Township is just two weeks removed from giving high-flying Portage its toughest game of the year. The Indians fell to the Mustangs, 27-13. Conemaugh hasn’t won a D5 title since 1993, a drought that has entered its 16th year. CT finished 8-4 last season as the D5 “A” runner up.
