District 5 Talk Week 3

Written by: on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Conemaugh Township – Indians enjoying a 3-0 start

The Indians are off to a rather impressive start to its season, picking up right where it left off from last years’ 8-4, District 5 “A” runner-up finish to Windber. They’ve done it with an offense that is averaging 392 yards and 35 points per game.

The two most important names to remember from this Indian team are quarterback George Bivens and multi-purpose back Seth Zaman.

Bivens has completed over 63 percent of his passes for 388 yards and seven touchdowns without throwing an interception. Zaman, meanwhile, is off to a tremendous start – he’s run for 600 yards and seven touchdowns and has nine catches for 146 yards and four additional scores.

Conemaugh Township’s perfect season, though, probably will be a thing of the past after Friday. The Indians get set to welcome the high-flying Portage Mustangs to town, a team that leads the state in scoring average per game.

Berlin-Brothersvalley – Junior RB off to good start after injury-shortened ’08 season

The Mountaineers struggled through a rough 2008 season, finishing 3-7 and without one of their prized assets in the ground game. Then-sophomore running back Ian Saylor didn’t play in the entire second half of the season, after totaling 552 yards rushing and wreaking havoc on special teams.

This year, Saylor hasn’t missed a beat for Berlin. He’s off to yet another fast start, leading the team in rushing yardage with 416 and four touchdowns on 47 carries. The Mountaineers are averaging nearly 257 yards per game on the ground – Saylor accounts for nearly 139 of those yards per game.

Berlin-Brothersvalley gets set for a big game with unbeaten Meyersdale this weekend. Last season, the Mounts fell to the Red Raiders, 14-10.
