The Game: Western Beaver (7 A) @ Rochester (7 A)
Date: Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, from Rochester HS in Rochester, PA
2008 Record: Western Beaver (2-1), Rochester (3-0)
About Western Beaver: The Golden Beavers are coming off what could be considered a big upset, knocking off a high-flying Monaca team 18-0. The Golden Beavers held the Indians’ option attack to just three total yards of offense and knocked quarterback Brandon Gaydosh out of the game with a leg injury. The shutout of Monaca was much-needed for the Western defense, which was allowing an average of 26.5 points per game. After the Week 3 shutout, Western Beaver now enters the game with Rochester allowing an average of 17.67 points per game.
About Rochester: Speaking of defense, Rochester has played some this season. First, they held a highly-regarded Monessen squad to zero points in a Week 1 shutout, then held Riverview to a field goal, and shutout Union Area (New Castle) last week. Through the first three weeks of the season, the Rams’ defense is allowing an average of just a point per game, the #2 defense in all of western Pennsylvania, behind only Jeannette, who has yet to allow a point.
The Rams are led by Paul Everson, is comparable to Derek Moye from a couple of years ago, but Everson’s got a solid supporting cast behind him, including running back Chad Pennington (no relation to the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback) and quarterback Brandon Gray, who was a perfect 6-of-6 passing for 115 yards in the Rams’ 41-3 victory over Riverview two weeks ago.
Rochester, which has won seven WPIAL championships, is averaging 30 points per game.
