New Castle – Indiana Preview

Written by: on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

The Game: New Castle (7 AAA) @ Indiana (7 AAA)

Date: Friday, Sept. 5, from Indiana HS

2008 Record: New Castle (0-1), Indiana (1-0)

About New Castle: The Red Hurricanes fell victim to rival Butler in the opening week of the season, 28-21.  New Castle got a solid output from running back Keith Greene, who finished the game with 12 rushes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, an average of over 9.2 yards per carry.  NC also got 143 yards passing and 42 yards rushing from quarterback Michael Bongivengo, who averaged 11 yards per completion and 5.2 yards per rush.

Bongivengo, despite completing 52 percent of his passes (13-of-25), threw two interceptions.  All of the Red Hurricane scores came on the ground.

New Castle is a 10-time WPIAL champion, and hasn’t won a WPIAL title since 1998, when it was a member of AAAA.

About Indiana: There were one, there were two, there were 11 Little Indians wreaking havoc on the Plum Mustang defense in Week 1, specifically quarterback Ben Fiscus, who threw touchdown passes of nine and 31 yards to Kevin Stapleton, and added a three-yard scoring run later in the game.

But Fiscus was not the only Indian that had a solid offensive performance.  Running back Jay Pettina ran for 142 on 20 carries (over 7 yards per rush) and scored a touchdown on the night as well.

Indiana competes in the Greater Allegheny conference of the WPIAL’s Class “AAA,” and with a strong season, could find itself playing in the WPIAL playoffs come the end of October, now that Pine-Richland has moved out of the conference.
