The Game: Fairview (10 AA) @ Sharon Area (10 AA)
Date: Saturday, Nov. 8th, 2008, from Wilmington Area HS in New Wilmington
2008 Record: Fairview (7-2), Sharon Area (9-1)
About Fairview: The Tigers enter this game fresh off of a loss to red-hot General McLane, 28-17. Fairview’s other loss came to North East, the Region 4 “AA” champion, 28-14 earlier in the season. But Fairview should not be taken lightly.
The Tigers have a very potent rushing offense which averages close to 175 yards per game. Jared Lane has been on an absolute roll the past three weeks, and leads the team with 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns on 164 attempts. Peter Jackson, the #2 threat in the ground game, adds a respectable 647 yards and eight touchdowns on 122 carries.
Jordan Boice directs the Tiger offense, which averages close to 23 points per game. He’s thrown for 603 yards and seven touchdowns. Boice’s favorite targets are Jesse Misfud (13 rec., 227 yards, TD) and Tyler Goodwin (10, 178, 3).
Fairview won its only District 10 championship in 1992, when the Tigers advanced all the way to the Western Finals before falling to East Allegheny 34-13. Fairview finished as the 2006 D10 “AA” runner-up to Wilmington, 23-6.
About Sharon Area: Also nicknamed the Tigers, Sharon Area has quite a playoff history. Sharon has won nine District 10 championships among three different classifications, and is only one of four PIAA affiliates to accomplish that feat.
Sharon appeared in four PIAA Western Finals, and the 1994 and 1995 “AAA” state title games, falling to powerful Berwick Area both times.
The Tigers offense, which averages 277 yards per game, is a model of balance. There is not a 1,000-yard rusher, but Sharon spreads the ball around, and use quite a variety of players in its offense.
Quarterback Todd Rearick is the straw that stirs the drink. He leads the team with 429 rushing yards, but has some very impressive passing stats. Rearick’s completed 88-of-179 passes for 1,346 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Receivers Mike Tomko (36 rec., 632 yards, 10 TD), Dustin Norcross (20, 305, 6), Ron Howard (15, 234, 2), and Louis Brown (15, 223, 5) are all targets in the Tiger passing attack, one which Fairview, one might argue, hasn’t seen since the loss to North East.
