About McKeesport Area: The Tigers are rolling. Of course, that was expected after the season opener with national powerhouse Cincinnati Colerain in the Herbstreit Challenge. Since Week 1, the red and blue have scored 350 points, an average of 50 points per game. McKeesport has topped the 40-point mark six times in the last seven weeks, and 29 times since the start of the 2004 season.
The Tigers’ flexbone/triple option offense is averaging 44.63 points per game, and is led by fullback Nico Price and a two-quarterback rotation.
This is the third time McKeesport and Gateway have met on a Thursday night FSN showcase game. The Tigers have won nine of the last 14 meetings in this series, according to www.gatewaygators.com.
About Gateway: The Gators are generating a lot of national attention, being ranked 4th in the nation by the USA-Today. Gateway had been ranked #3 in the country, but fell a spot after their 30-18 victory over McDowell, the tightest game Gateway has been in all season.
Gateway has a potent one-two punch in the backfield with seniors Brian Williams and Dorian Bell. Williams (996 rush yards, 13 TD) and Bell (551, 11) key the Gator ground game, which averages 277 yards per game.
Junior quarterback Rob Kalkstein has thrown for 1,108 yards and 15 touchdowns. Kalkstein is just 20 yards shy of 3,200 career passing yards, and he’s got three steady receivers in Corey Brown (25 rec., 420 yards, 11 TD), Josh Vermeulen (12, 267, 2), and Jeff Parrish (9, 131, 2).
Defensively, Gateway is allowing an average of 7.4 points per game, and has tallied 45 sacks, 19 takeaways, and held six of its eight opponents to eight points or less. Brendan Stevens leads Gateway’s defense with 13 sacks; Dorian Bell has 63 tackles and six sacks, and Corey Brown has 32 tackles and a pair of interceptions.
Kicker Ryan Lichtenstein, a Division-1 prospect, has kicked 29 touchbacks and converted 43 PATs and three field goals.
