2008 Record: Highlands (4-0), Mars (3-1)
About Highlands: The Golden Rams have won 12 of their last 15 games, and reached the WPIAL quarterfinals a year ago, and, more impressively, Highlands has opened with three of its four victories on the road, including a 20-12 Week 2 victory against defending WPIAL “AAA” runner-up Montour.
Highlands has only scored 106 points this season, an average of 26 points per game. That average was boosted with the Golden Rams’ 48-31 victory against Kiski Area. Prior to the game with the Cavaliers, Highlands had only averaged 19 points per game.
The Golden Rams are led by dual threat quarterback Jeff Sinclair. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sinclair has topped 100 rushing yards in three of four games and passed for over 100 yards in three of four games.
About Mars: The Planets moved up from class “AA” at the end of last season, and, lost Billy Bair, one of the three running backs that ran for 2,000 yards in the WPIAL last season.
But Mars has not struggled, at least, not yet. The Planets won three games on the road, including WPIAL “AAAA” schools Fox Chapel and Plum, averaging 34.5 points in those two victories.
As always, Mars is a running-oriented team, but instead of just one back, Mars relies on two backs, Shane Kaclik and Austin Miele, to get the job done. Kaclik leads the team with 550 rushing yards and has scored four touchdowns. Miele has run for 297 yards and scored two touchdowns. The Planets average 250 rushing yards per game.
Quarterback John Brake has thrown for 186 yards and three touchdowns while adding five touchdowns on the ground. Brake directs a Planet offense which averages 27.8 points per game.
