Big School Coach of the Year: Mark Lyons, Central Valley

Written by: on Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Lyons helped guide Central Valley to the WPIAL AAA championship in its first season of varsity football, the first time a merged WPIAL champion was crowned in its inagural season since 1966. Lyons has won 82 career games and made three previous trips to the WPIAL finals at Three Rivers Stadium as the head coach of Monaca High School.

Central Valley overcame a 4-3 start to its season to secure the fourth and final playoff slot out of the WPIAL’s loaded Parkway Conference. Along the way, the Warriors defeated the #3, #6, #2 and #1 seeds to win the WPIAL championship.

CV was the lowest seeded team (#14) to reach the WPIAL title game in the AAA classification since 2004, when a four-loss West Mifflin team faced Thomas Jefferson, losing 20-0. CV fell in its first PIAA playoff game to Erie Cathedral Prep, 31-21.
